For Eric Choong, Fashion is a Calling!His interest began at a young age. Mummy used to have many imported fashion magazines at home, and young Eric would flip through them. Eric innocently found his passion and started his sketching at age 7. His passion grew with practice, and so enhanced that his school teachers actually requested him

to design outfits for them while he was only twelve of age!This amazing young talent developed his passion and graduated from the Hong Kong Institute of Fashion Design in 1986. He further lived in Hong Kong and Australia for 4 years to hone his skills and fashion sense. Returning home in 1990, he started his own label “Eric Choong”.Based on his philosophy that “fashion should be an expression of individual style and personality”, the label quickly gained reputation in the fashion set for his impressive creation that transcends fads with timeless beauty. Eric broke new grounds when he cleverly introduced and combined Malaysian cultural influences into his sophisticated designs.

Encouraged by the success of his eponymous label, Eric ventured into custom bridal wear. Eric Choong Bridal was a natural extension due to increasing request by existing clients and he started to design their bridal trousseau. His penchant for the extravagant and luxurious translated into breathtaking wedding gowns. His business today also comprises the Evening, Cocktail and Corporate Design labels together with the newly-minted menswear label, Freedom by Eric Choong.

Twenty two consistent years in the industry, Eric has amassed innumerable awards and accolades, amongst them notably: Malaysian Tourism Board’s Top 10 Malaysian Designers (1990-1992); designated haute couture designer by Malaysia Tatler (2001-2003); Best Costume Designer award at the 19th Malaysian Film Festival for the film 3rd Generation (2006); and Designer of the Year together with the Best Collection Showcase of the Year awards at the Malaysian International Fashion Week (2007). He deserves them all.

He also regularly represents Malaysia in various fashion showcases in ASEAN, Asia Pacific and China, the most recent of which were the Sydney Bridal Fashion Week 2009 and Pakistan Fashion Week 2010. Eric recently chalked up another achievement with the publication of his autobiography In Full Bloom.

Eric thinks that the Fashion Industry is an exciting one. People are becoming more open minded, accepting and adventurous in their fashion sense. According to Eric, in Asia, there are more and more up and coming talents who are brimming with creativity and are not afraid to push beyond boundaries. He hopes to see Asian designers and brands making a name for themselves at international level.

As with most creative people, Eric finds his inspiration everywhere and anywhere, including current world issues, pop culture, people and nature etc. Above all, Eric proclaims that seeing his clients looking beautiful and happy in HIS creations are most fulfilling! Thus, keeps him motivated and encourages him to try to top himself every day.

What an impressive designer! So impressive that our very own wedding trousseau were designed by none other than Eric Choong! Eric is well known for his good “cutting”! A good “cut” is imperative in fashion. A clever design must be matched ingeniously with a good cut. This is of utmost priority to those seeking professional and custom made bridal wears. The result was Eric gave me a good cut and design that complimented my personality and a suit for Nick that he was proud of.
